Bargain Acne Spot Treatments

,

For that annoyingly red pimple, it's acne spot treatments to the rescue. Spot treatments are used directly on breakouts. While they won't stop new pimples from forming, they can help that existing blemish to heal more quickly.

Remember, don't apply any spot treatment too often, or you'll end up with a red and peeling patch. And if you are currently under a doctor's care for your acne, get his approval before using a spot treatment.

Almay Blemish Healer for Oily Skin
Active ingredient: salicylic acid

This inexpensive spot treatment also contains witch hazel, and meadowsweet. Witch hazel is often used as an astringent. Meadowsweet, a perennial herb, is claimed to have refreshing and purifying effects on the skin.

This spot treatment absorbs fully into the skin, so makeup goes on over it smoothly. And, like all Almay products, this treatment is hypoallergenic and fairly gentle for sensitive skin.

Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment
Active ingredient: 2.5% benzoyl peroxide
This formulation is said to give the power of a 10% benzoyl peroxide but with less irritation. The cream itself is white, but dries clear on the skin. Unfortunately, makeup doesn't go on smoothly over the treated spot, so you'll probably want to put this one on before bed.

Clean and Clear Advantage Spot Treatment
Active ingredient: 2% salicylic acid
Dries clear on the skin, but makeup may not go smoothly over the top. It does tend to sting when first applied, but it goes away after a few minutes. Most people are willing to tolerate the stinging because this product makes pimples smaller overnight.

Nature's Gate Natural Results Extra Strength Spot Corrector
Active ingredient: 2% salicylic acid
Looking for eco-friendly skin care? This product is for you. It is paraben-free, and all added botanical extracts are certified organic. No animal byproducts are used, nor has the product been tested on animals. And the packaging is completely recyclable. Good for your skin and good for the earth.

AcneFree Clear Skin Treatments Acne and Blackhead Terminator
Active ingredients: 1.5% salicylic acid and 1% benzoyl peroxide
Such a great product, we'll forgive them the clunky name. Containing two super effective acne-fighting ingredients, this spot treatment works to reduce redness and unclog pores. It's like getting two treatments for the price of one. But don't apply it too often, or you'll end up with an irritated, peeling spot.

Baby Acne Remedies

,
A commonly observed problem among newborn babies is baby acne or neonatorum. Baby acne is marked by red spots on the skin of a newborn baby. The red spots may appear on the face, chin, neck, hands and back side of the body. These baby acne cause concern in parents, as they feel that their babies would grow up with some skin complications. The fact is, that baby acne is perfectly normal.

Baby acne occurs due to the passage of maternal hormones into the baby's body. The presence of maternal hormones in the baby's body triggers the sebaceous glands of the baby. During pregnancy, these hormones get transferred through the placenta. This amounts to red pimples and skin rashes on the forehead. Some babies even suffer from whiteheads.

Baby Acne Treatment

Baby acne usually shows its presence in the third week of the baby's life. According to a study, male babies are more prone to baby acne than female babies. The baby acne is the form of small pustules, appearing like a red bump above the baby's skin. In most of the cases, the baby acne automatically reduces and fades away. If the baby acne is not getting cured even after six months of age, then it is a time to consult the doctor, as it may be a sign of some other complications. Here in this article, I have tried to give some baby acne remedies.

How to Treat Baby Acne?

Some doctors also support the fact, that baby acne can also be caused due to an allergy or unhygienic living conditions of the baby in the initial months of the birth. Let's check out some remedies for baby acne.

Before going for baby acne remedies, make sure that you have follow all hygienic precautions while taking adequate baby care. Don't try to wash or touch the skin of the baby with an untidy cloth. If your baby is showing signs of baby acne during winter, then it is possible that you might have wrapped him/her in too many clothes. If that is the case, then let the child be comfortable instead of wrapping it with too many clothes.

Since, the baby is still in its infancy, avoid even thinking of any lotions and other hard medications. One of the best baby acne remedies is, mixing honey and lime juice together and applying the paste on baby's body. Take a tsp honey and a tsp lime juice. After mixing them, slowly apply it on the baby's body. Use cotton swab to apply it. After half an hour, wash the body with light warm water.

One of the effective baby acne remedies is applying breast milk on the affected part of the baby's body. With the help of a cotton swab, gently apply the breast milk on the baby's affected part of the body. Mother's should also exercise control on their diets. Eating too much oil food can affect the quality of milk and that can indirectly cause baby acne. Mother's should take fresh fruits and juices, so that the nutrients are passed on to the baby. The baby acne remedies also include washing the clothes of the baby regularly and maintaining hygiene, so that, it is not affected by any allergies.

Baby acne is a simple condition, that affects babies during the pregnancy and shows the effect few weeks after the baby is born. It is a common myth, that baby acne needs some serious treatment. The fact is, baby acne must be dealt patiently. With time, baby acne disappears on its own. In case, it continues even six months after the birth, then taking a doctor's opinion is essential. Parents should not needlessly run for creams and ointments that claim to heal baby acne. Always consult the doctor before treating your child with any type of skin creams. By following the above mentioned baby acne remedies, you can cure baby acne easily.

Body Acne Treatment

,
Mild body acne often responds to good daily skin care and over-the-counter treatments. Try using a salicylic acid wash every day. Pads containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be wiped over affected areas. You may also want to try a lotion containing an alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic or lactic acid. Alpha hydroxy acids help to speed cell turnover, rapidly exfoliating the skin and reducing the number of pore blockages.

When treating body acne, you typically can use several acne treatment products at once without causing excessive irritation (for example, a salicylic acid wash plus a benzoyl peroxide lotion). The skin on the back, chest, shoulders, and upper arms is tougher than facial skin, and can generally tolerate more powerful treatments. However, the skin on the neck is fairly sensitive. Use treatment products slowly and carefully in this area. If you notice excessive irritation, dryness or peeling on any area of the body, scale back or discontinue use of the treatment product, and consult your doctor.

Moderate to severe forms of body acne can be difficult to control, and need to be treated by a physician. Topical and oral medications are often prescribed. Common treatments include:
  • Retin A
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Accutane (isotretinoin)
Accutane is used for very severe forms of acne, or after other treatment options have been exhausted, as it carries significant potential side effects.

As with facial acne, it takes time to control body acne. You will most likely have to try several treatment products or medications before finding the one that works best for you. Fortunately, most cases of acne can be successfully cleared, given time and patience.

Natural Acne Treatment

,

If you have a condition of acne that seems to fight every treatment you have tried, you may want to consider natural acne treatment methods. These natural acne treatment methods work very well on their own, or you may consider using natural acne treatment as an adjunct to other acne treatments that you are using. These natural acne treatment methods are generally not overnight solutions, but they do help to support your body’s ability to metabolize your foods properly, and ensure overall detoxification of the impurities that are known to cause acne.

Alternative herbs that are used as a natural acne treatment are traditionally used to cleanse the tissues in the body’s systems. These herbs work to detoxify the body and rid the body of impurities that cause acne from the inside out. Because a natural acne treatment will work on the internal bodily systems, it will not replace any treatments that you are using as a topical or over-the-counter method. However, these natural acne treatment methods may just work indirectly on your body in a way that your regular products will not.

Alternative herbs and natural acne treatment methods have a tendency to be quite gentle in how they affect the system. Because of this, natural acne treatment methods are most efficiently used as a treatment method for the long term. You will not experience overnight results, but natural acne treatment methods will not only improve your acne in the long term, but improve your overall health as well. These natural acne treatment methods are very good for chronic inflammation issues that directly involve the skin.

A very common combination of herbs used as a natural acne treatment is the combination of Echinacea, blue flag, yellow dock, and burdock. This combination is mixed and infused with boiling water for a tea. Honey can be added for taste, and this tea should be consumed three times daily. Other herbs that work well towards a natural acne treatment are poke root, cleavers, figwort, and red clover. Another tea you can make for a natural acne treatment is sarsaparilla, burdock, and dandelion. These herbs are combined in a very similar manner and infused with boiling water to make a tea.

If you are looking for a natural acne treatment method that is topical, there are many choices you can make in this regard as well. Tea tree oil is a very common herb used as a natural acne treatment that is topically applied directly to your blemishes. This is a wonderful natural acne treatment if you have sensitive skin. Fresh cabbage juice also works very well as a natural acne treatment when it is applied directly to your inflamed areas and is also very effective for those that have sensitive skin.

You can also make a face wash that works as a natural acne treatment as well. Blend chamomile and calendula with boiling water as a tea. Before you use it, let it cool, and you want to keep this in the fridge for your daily wash. You can spray this on your face, or dab it onto your blemishes regularly.

All of these ingredients for a natural acne treatment method are readily available at your local health food store.

Effective Acne Treatment and Product

,
Many teenagers around the world probably share this sentiment as they discover with horror their first pimple on their freshly scrubbed face. As teenagers enter into puberty, they are faced with new and exciting discoveries and challenges. Puberty though is also fraught with frustrations and changes, including physical changes in their bodies that often leave the teenagers with less than desirable pimples on the face.

Acne commonly occurs during the adolescence period. It is often caused by excessive secretion of oil from the glands. The typical acne lesions that appear on the face and body are comedones, papules, pustules and pimples.

Aside from the physical scar that acne leaves on your skin, it also inflicts an emotional toll, negatively affecting teenagers' self-esteem and confidence. For some, acne can become so severe that they shun social contact, leading to social insecurity and sometimes even depression.

acne treatment With the advanced acne treatments and acne products available today, acne need no longer have such a crippling impact on the sufferers' life. Once the outward symptom of acne first becomes apparent, that is, inflammation and lesion on the skin, it is important that you treat it right away so as to slow down or stop further inflammation.

It is a good idea to pay the dermatologist a visit and to have the doctor recommend the best acne treatment for you. The treatment recommended will vary on skin type and also your age.

Acne can be treated much more effectively if it is treated along with acne products, be they over the counter or prescribed. There are numerous acne products sold over the counter currently for the prevention and treatment of acne, with many of these products scientifically proven to be effective in the treatment of acne.

In severe cases, it is best that you consult the dermatologist for advice and get a prescription for stronger acne products. These acne treatments and products require a higher degree of monitoring, as they tend to have more side effects.

The acne product recommended depends on the type and severity of the acne. There are acne ointments and acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide to treat both mild and moderate acne. For more serious acne, there are topical antibiotics that kill the bacteria in the blocked follicles. For even more serious cases, oral antibiotics are effective. And for extremely severe cases, laser surgery can cut the root of the acne.

Aside from treating acne with products, a proper diet is also very important. Teens should avoid eating foods that are too oily, too spicy or too acidic.

So with all these acne treatment options available, you can rest assured that acne will never be an ugly and permanent fixture on your face. When acne rears its ugly head, do not let it ruin your life. With the right acne treatment and right acne products you can get rid of acne for good!

If left untreated severe acne can be a serious problem. Mike Walden, a Certified Nutrition Specialist and Health Consultant who was once a chronic acne sufferer, found a holistic system to permanently clear his acne problem and end breakouts. He has taught thousands of people to get the clear skin without resorting to drugs, creams or ointments.

Acne Treatment Severe Cases

,
If your acne is more severe you should consider seeing a dermatologist - a skin specialist. The specialist may prescribe a treatment that contains some of the active ingredients mentioned above, such as benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, as well as adabalene. Prescription medications for acne are presented in many forms, such as creams, lotions, etc. Your dermatologist will decide what is best for you.

You may be prescribed an oral or topical antibiotic. Antibiotics can combat the growth of bacteria and reduce inflammation. Most commonly Erythromyocin and Tetracycline are prescribed as antibiotics for the treatment of acne.

  • Treating a cyst with interlesional corticosteroid injection
If an acne cyst becomes severely inflamed there is a high risk of rupturing. A rupturing acne cyst can often result in scarring. The specialist may inject a diluted corticosteroid to treat the inflamed cyst and to prevent scarring. The injection will lower the inflammation and speed up healing. The cyst will "melt" within a few days.

  • Isotretinoin
This is a strong oral retinoid, used for the treatment of severe cystic acne, as well as severe acne that has not responded to other medications and treatments.

  • Oral antibiotics
Oral antibiotics are frequently prescribed for patients with severe acne and some patients with moderate acne too. The aim of such oral antibiotics is to lower the population of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a bacterium commonly found on the skin, which will multiply rapidly in blocked follicles. The dosage will be initially high, and then as the acne reduces so will the dosage. Antibiotics are not taken for more than six months. As time passes the P. acnes can become resistant to the antibiotic and another antibiotic is needed. Some American studies have indicated that it is better to use oral broad-spectrum antibiotics.

  • Oral contraceptives
The majority of women with acne find that taking certain oral contraceptives clears it up. Oral contraceptives suppress the overactive gland and are commonly used as long-term treatments for acne in women. If the woman has a blood-clotting disorder, smokes, has a history of migraines, or is over 35, she should not take this medication without checking with a gynecologist first.

  • Topical antimicrobials (topical = applied to the skin or mucus membranes)
As with oral antibiotics, the aim of topical antimicrobials for the treatment of acne is to reduce P. acnes populations. Topical antimicrobials are used for patients with moderate to severe acne. Examples may be clindamycin, erythromycin, and sodium sulfacetamide

The dermatologist may prescribe a topical retinoid. Topical retinoids are a derivative of Vitamin A and are very popular for the treatment of acne. They unclog the pores and prevent whiteheads and blackheads from developing. Examples of topical retinoids prescribed in the USA are adapalene, tazarotene, and tretinoin.

7 Adult Acne Facts

,
If you noticed the acne you had when you were 15 has returned in your 30s, rest assured, you're in good company. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne. Here are a few facts about adult acne and how to rid your skin of it:

Fact #1: Acne usually begins with blackheads Blackheads are not dirt, they're actually the result of oil and dead cells getting trapped in a pore where they block the duct and mix with bacteria. They then turn black when exposed to air. Red pimples develop when blackheads become inflamed and they spread when touched with dirty hands. When the pimple becomes infected, it develops a whitehead or pustule. These can break and cause scars.

So how to banish blackheads? Gently, according to San Francisco dermatologist Seth Matarasso in InStyle Magazine. People tend to scrub too hard, which causes inflammation, he says. Instead of a grainy scrub, Matarasso suggests trying an exfoliant with alpha-hydroxy acids. A good one is Lancome Pure Focus Deep Pore Refining Scrub. You can also use a salicylic acid cleanser like Bliss Clog Dissolving Cleansing Milk. These chemical products clean out pores better than scrubs. For a great quick fix, Biore Pore Perfect Strips will get rid of your blackheads.

Fact #2: There are several causes of adult acne These are: Stress, bad cosmetics, hormones and birth control pills. Stress causes your oil glands to overcompensate. Bad cosmetics lead to bacteria-laden pores. Hormones cause the sebacuous glands to overact and birth control pills with androgen in them can cause breakouts.

To keep breakouts at bay, look for oil-free, non-acnegenic products like Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and Neutrogena Oil-free Cleanser.

Fact #3: Cheese and chocolate have nothing to do with your acne Your skin, however, WILL benefit from a good facial. Why? Because acne is not a disease, rather it is a condition of the skin and a good facialist knows exactly what your skin needs: Sulfur, zinc and camphor masks, exfoliation, blackhead extractions and at-home follow-up.

Fact #4: Don't treat adult acne like the teen kind The products you used as a teenager won't work on adult skin. Here's a 2-step program for cleansing and treating your blemished skin:

Step 1: Pick the right cleanser. Look for medicated cleansers with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. See my list of the Best Salicylic Acid Cleansers.

Step 2: Exfoliate with a salicylic acid treatment, which will clean out pores. Just don't exfoliate too much or scrub too hard (see the blackhead section above). Two to 3 times a week is perfect.

Fact #5: Treatment systems have completely cleared up skin on many people Proactiv Solution 3-step System is a classic kit that has worked wonders on many. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is another program that is highly recommended and my friends with acne personally recommend MD Skincare All-Over Blemish Solution.

Fact #6: The dermatologist will clear your skin up fast Too many women wait to see a doctor for their skin problems. If you have basic acne, over-the-counter treatments with salicylic acid (there's that magic word again) to unclog pores and benzoyl peroxide to reduce bacteria on skin should do you, but for serious acne, a dermatologist has an arsenal of products to clear up your skin.

Retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid and birth control pills are all options usually covered by insurance. You might consider laser treatments, but these are more costly (about $500-$2,400). Severe cases are best cleared up by Accutane, which is a 5-month course that is considered the most effective treatment available. However Accutane is controversial and can lead to a host of side effects including birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Other side effects can include severe depression, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative colitis. See "Accutane Side Effects" from Drugwatch.com for a full list.

Fact #7: Yes, those new machines that target acne do work We were surprised to hear this as well, but the reports are out on machines like Zeno Acne Clearing Device and they are good. They won't help blackheads or deep cystic acne, but they do work for your general run-of-the-mill pimples, according to Glamour Magazine.

So how do they work? The Zeno, which is a handheld machine that looks like an iPod, works by driving heat through a pimple. The heat kills the bacteria and supposedly improves blood circulation to the affected area so it heals faster. Clinical trials show 90% of pimples treated with Zeno disappeared or were significantly reduced within 24 hours.

Beyond Retin-A

,
Retin-A has been around for a long time, and it's still a popular acne treatment. Retin-A belongs to a group of medications called topical retinoids, which means Retin-A isn't the only game in town. Many other topical retinoids are available to treat acne, like:

Retin-A Micro - Although they sound similar, Retin-A and Retin-A Micro are actually different medications. They both use the active ingredient tretinoin, but Retin-A Micro releases the medication more slowly (so it might not be as irritating for you.)

Differin (adapalene) - This medication is more accurately described as a retinoid-like compound. It means it's not technically a retinoid, but it's often lumped in with them because it works just like one. This is another that can be less irritating than other retinoids.

Tazorac (tazarotene) - This medication probably isn't as popular as the others because it tends to be more irritating, but many people have found it effective.

Epiduo - This medication is cool because it combines two acne-fighting ingredients: adapalene (AKA Differin) and benzoyl peroxide. It's a two-for-one application.

Ziana - Here's another two-for-one medication. This time, though, it's a combo of tretinoin (hello, Retin-A) and a topical antibiotic clindamycin. Because you're hitting acne in two different ways, these combo medications can be really effective.

All of these medications are prescription, so you'll need to head to your doc's office to get them. I think topical retinoids are a super good addition to many acne treatment routines, so even if you're not into Retin-A you might want to give these others a try.

12 Ways to Get Better Results from Acne Treatment

,
Do you wish that your acne medication left you with clearer skin? Better results may not come from trying the latest acne treatment or a stronger acne-fighting cream — but from making some simple changes.

* Use your acne treatments exactly as prescribed. Acne only clears when the treatment targets everything that is causing the acne. Since most acne medications target only 1 or 2 causes, 2 or 3 products are often necessary. To see clearer skin, these products must be used as prescribed.

* Stop using acne treatments not prescribed by your dermatologist. Using acne products that are not part of the treatment plan prescribed by your dermatologist can irritate your skin. Irritated skin usually leads to more breakouts. For best results, dermatologists recommend using only the acne-fighting products and medications in your treatment plan.

* Speak up. Dermatologists do not want patients to feel confused about acne treatment. If you do not understand something, ask about it. If an acne treatment option not prescribed by your dermatologist interests you, be sure to mention it. Asking questions is often the answer to effective acne treatment.

* Never pop, squeeze, or pick acne. Popping and squeezing pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts tends to make acne worse. All this does is make the acne last longer. This can make it difficult to see clearer skin no matter what treatment you are using. Trying to get rid of a pimple by popping or picking also can lead to scarring, which can be permanent.

* Avoid abrasive soap, facial scrub, toner, astringent, and masks. These can irritate the skin, and irritated skin is more likely to break out. Irritated skin also makes it more difficult to tolerate acne medication. A mild cleanser used twice a day to wash the skin is actually more effective for controlling acne and preventing breakouts.

* Do not scrub your skin clean. While scrubbing away oil and grime may seem like a good idea, scrubbing actually irritates acne-prone skin. Irritating the skin generally leads to breakouts.

* When washing the skin, use lukewarm (not hot) water and gently apply a mild cleanser with your fingertips. Washcloths and puffs tend to be too abrasive. Limiting washing to twice a day can help reduce irritation and dryness. Wait 5 to 15 minutes to apply acne medication. Applying acne medication right after you shower or wash your face can irritate the skin and lead to breakouts. Wet skin is most absorbent. To avoid irritation, dermatologists recommend waiting 5 to 15 minutes before applying acne medication.

* Use only oil-free skin care and hair care products. Makeup, hair gel, and other products used by people with acne-prone skin should not contain oil. Oil tends to clog pores and lead to breakouts. Look for products that are labeled “oil free,” “nonacnegenic,” or “noncomedogenic.” This means the product does not clog pores.

* Apply acne medication before makeup. Wearing an oil-free makeup is fine, but make sure it does not prevent the acne medication from working. Makeup should always be applied after topical acne medication.

* Continue using the medication when skin clears. To keep skin blemish free, most people with acne need to continue using at least 1 acne medication. If you have been using an over-the-counter product, you may be able to taper your use to a few times a week.

* Gently cleanse skin after sweating. Sweating, especially under a hat or helmet, can aggravate acne-prone skin. Gently cleansing the skin as quickly as possible afterwards can help prevent breakouts. When cleansing the skin, avoid the temptation to rub or scrub sweat from the skin. This can irritate the skin and cause breakouts.

* Give acne-fighting products enough time to work. As a rule of thumb, it takes 6 to 8 weeks before you begin to see an improvement. Improvement does not mean blemish-free skin, but a noticeable difference. It generally takes about 6 months to see clear skin.
